Open Game Content is embodied in this program. Everything in this program is open gaming content except the code of the program itself. What does that mean? It means that everything you see on the screen as you are using the program to generate traps, names of taverns, random magical effects, etc. is Open Game Content unless it says otherwise. You can use it in accordance with the terms of the Open Game License (section III below). This does not mean that all material presented originated with the Dungeon Crawler program here at Emerald Giant Software. Much of what you will see is Open Game Content from other sources, such as the System Reference Document (“SRD”) from Wizards of the Coast.
Open Game Content appears in the program with a coded reference citation wherever possible. For example, the monsters appearing on the combat screen have a description that ends with a source notation such as “MM”. In this program, MM refers to the SRD mentioned above, and refers specifically to monsters presented in the SRD. A full listing of sources and their abbreviations appears on the “Party” screen (this is also where you indicate what sources to want the program to use as it generates things for you).
There are some specific cases where the citation does not appear, and invariably this is where “flavor text” has been assembled using short entries from random tables. For example, you may generate a tavern that bears a sign which reads, “No hobgoblins allowed”, or part of the description reads “masterwork thieves' tools left unattended under a chair”. “Hobgoblins” and “masterwork thieves' tools” are rightfully part of the SRD provided by wizards of the coast, but adding the SRD notation in the middle of dynamically generated flavor text is very annoying. So here’s what we’ve done:
First, made it clear that the entire contents of the database is Open Game Content.
Second, every piece of data in the program can be examined via Microsoft Access (the database file is “Crawler.MDB”), always right alongside its reference code.
Third, we’ve listed every OGC (Open Game Content) source used by the program, along with its reference code in its own table, and on the Party screen.
In short, if you agree to the Open Game License, you know the rules, and you know the copyrights (section 15 of the license in section III below); and if you want to look up a complete reference for a particular word or phrase that appears on your screen (like a monster’s name or a character class) you always can.
